Segmental duplications contribute to gene expression differences between humans and chimpanzees.

In addition to specific changes in cis- and trans-regulatory elements, structural changes in the genome are hypothesized to underlie a large number of differences in gene expression between species. Accordingly, we show that species-specific segmental duplications are enriched with genes that are differentially expressed between humans and chimpanzees.

Using reporter gene assays to identify cis regulatory differences between humans and chimpanzees.

Most phenotypic differences between human and chimpanzee are likely to result from differences in gene regulation, rather than changes to protein-coding regions. To date, however, only a handful of human-chimpanzee nucleotide differences leading to changes in gene regulation have been identified. To hone in on differences in regulatory elements between human and chimpanzee, we focused on 10 gen...

Differences in DNA methylation patterns between humans and chimpanzees

Methylation at CpG dinucleotides is important for gene regulation in mammals [1]. However, it is unknown how methylation patterns change during evolution. Here, we compare methylation patterns between humans and chimpanzees at 36 genes in the brain, the liver and in lymphocytes. We find that the extent of the change in methylation pattern is much more extensive in the brain than in the other ti...

Differences between chimpanzees and humans in visual temporal integration

Humans have a superior ability to integrate spatially separate visual information into an entire image. In contrast, comparative cognitive studies have demonstrated that nonhuman primates and avian species are superior in processing relatively local features; however, animals in these studies were required to ignore local shape when they perceived the global configuration, and no studies have d...

Global analysis of alternative splicing differences between humans and chimpanzees.

Alternative splicing is a powerful mechanism affording extensive proteomic and regulatory diversity from a limited repertoire of genes. However, the extent to which alternative splicing has contributed to the evolution of primate species-specific characteristics has not been assessed previously. Using comparative genomics and quantitative microarray profiling, we performed the first global anal...
